Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
It’s one of football’s biggest debates, with fans on both sides of the fence making compelling arguments as to why his favorite is the best player on the planet.
The careers of the two soccer Goliaths have started to decline in recent years, with Messi now 32 and Ronaldo 35.
This meant that last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony was more important to the duo than any of the previous ones.
The pair was level, having won five Gold Balls each.
And it was Messi who won a decisive sixth prize, one more than Ronaldo.
At night in Paris, Messi took the stage after his name was called as Liverpool center-back Virgil van Dijk was second and Ronaldo third.
Many expected to see Ronaldo’s reaction to his rival taking home the important sixth prize, but the Portuguese did not attend.
Instead, Ronaldo collected two awards the same night at the Gran Gala del Calcio, an event that celebrates the achievements of Serie A, held in Milan.
But it seems that Ronaldo was not satisfied with the ‘silver medal’.
The Portuguese reportedly did not show up for dinner to open the night, but instead arrived at 11.30 p.m. just to collect their trophies.
French publication L’Equipe, via Oh My Goal, added that Ronaldo seemed unhappy with the ceremony and could barely smile.
Juventus’ ultra-competitive striker is believed to have been gutted that Messi had won a sixth Ballon d’Or trophy.
The report adds that Ronaldo even feels he was robbed in 2018, and that he should have won a sixth Ballon d’Or instead of his then Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric.
