Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have respected each other to the fullest throughout their careers as footballers.

But it’s fair to say that they have always been rivals, fighting for the biggest prizes in football, from cups and titles to national accolades.

In 2018, Ronaldo was at Real Madrid, waiting in the Bernabéu tunnel before heading out onto the pitch to face Valencia.

He was greeted by a bewildered mascot, who couldn’t wait to chat with his hero and explain to Ronaldo how much he admires him.

Tunnel Cam captured the conversation between the young man and Ronaldo, when the mascot revealed his thoughts on the best players in the world.

The mascot said: “For me, you are the best player in the world and Messi …”

The young man was then interrupted by Ronaldo, who couldn’t help but smash his rival with the best dad joke.

“…It is bad!” Ronaldo added, eliciting laughter from his teammates.

Ronaldo has spoken out about Messi in the press on several occasions and has only had kind things to say about the Argentine.

Reflecting on their careers in 2019, Ronaldo said: “We have shared the stage for 15 years.

“I don’t know if that happened before, the same two guys on the same stage all the time.

“Of course we have a good relationship. We haven’t had dinner together yet, but hopefully in the future. We had that battle in Spain. I pushed him and he pushed me too. So it’s good to be a part of football history.” .

To Ronaldo’s dinner invitation, Messi later responded: “Yes, I have no problem with that … We may not be friends because we have never shared a dressing room together, but I always see him at the awards ceremonies and no problem.

“I don’t know if there will be a dinner because I don’t know if our paths will cross for obvious reasons, each of us has our own lives and our own commitments. But obviously I would accept the invitation.”
