Western Cape police arrested nine people and confiscated thousands of liters of “cheap wine”, cash and a truck when they detained a group of suspected liquor traffickers operating between Paarl and Cape Town.

The spokesman, Captain FC van Wyk, said that agents from the Anti-Gang and Crime Intelligence Unit had been guarding a farm in Paarl and a premises at the Industria Airport in Cape Town.

Police moved on Tuesday afternoon and arrested the nine people.

3,000 bottles of cheap five- and three-liter wine and 1,416 bottles of 750 ml red wine were seized.

Police found a well-oiled operation, which included forklifts, security uniforms and safes.

Photographs taken at the scene show the packaging of nondescript cardboard boxes.

Police also confiscated cash and a delivery truck.

It is illegal to sell or transport alcohol under the revised Level 3 regulations. The exceptions are alcohol destined for export and alcohol destined for disinfectants or industrial use.

The nine detainees are between 26 and 55 years old.

They are expected to appear before Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court charged with violating the Disaster Management Act, in connection with the sale, dispensation and distribution of alcohol.
