Durban – A vehicle belonging to the Chairman of the Reservoir Hills Community Police Forum has been set on fire.
Metro police spokesman Parbhoo Sewpersad said the Mercedes C-class was among the three vehicles that were set on fire during the protest on the M19 on Monday morning.
More than 10 private vehicles have been stoned and a liquor store and a butcher shop looted in the ongoing protest.
According to Sewpersad, some 600 people gathered on the road demanding that their electrical connections be restored.
“At the end of last week, the municipality entered this area near Varsity Drive and disconnected the illegal electrical connections.
“The neighbors demand that the electricity be reinstated.”
Sewpersad said the vehicle belonged to Pravin Gounder.
He described Gounder as one of the most “proactive” CPF members.
“He was instrumental in distributing food packages to informal settlers and took care of the wider community.”
Sewpersad said the eastbound carriageway of the M19 had been opened to traffic.
“Police are clearing debris from the road.”
He warned people to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
In addition to two private vehicles burned, a municipal bus was also destroyed.
Attempts to get a comment from Gounder were unsuccessful.
