JOHANNESBURG – Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned young people without pre-existing diseases that they are now at the same risk of dying from COVID-19 after a new variant of the disease was discovered.

Mkhize, along with health experts and scientists, presented new findings on Friday showing that the variant was spreading more rapidly and was responsible for the second wave.

The country has reported 8,725 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours and the total number of infections now stands at more than 901,000.

Mkhize has expressed concern about complacency among young South Africans.

“It cannot be that our young people should only adhere to life-saving measures only after they have been controlled to do so. Therefore, we call on parents, caregivers and young people to understand that now it is not just about thinking about others or even yourself and therefore you yourself run the same risk of dying from COVID-19. “
