Two of the stores are located in the Zevenwacht area near the Kuils River in Cape Town, while the third is in Somerset West.
The Shoprite group confirmed Wednesday that there was a case at their Checkers Zevenwacht store.
“After one of our colleagues at Checkers Zevenwacht tested positive for Covid-19, we closed this store and brought in a professional decontamination company to disinfect and deep clean the store,” the group said in a statement.
“We have informed the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the Department of Health.
“An employee screening program was immediately implemented, supported by the company’s mobile clinic. Those employees who had close contact with the infected person are now in quarantine for 14 days.”
The store will reopen in consultation with the provincial Health Department, according to the statement.
In the same area, a Superspar at Zevenwacht also confirmed that staff members tested positive.
“After testing all of our staff, some of the test results began to return,” the Spar store said in a statement on Facebook.
“We have now received more positive tests and our store will be closed for decontamination for the rest of Wednesday.
“All staff on duty will now isolate themselves. Our store will reopen with our reservation shift on Thursday at 08:00.”
In Somerset West, a Kwikspar in Lion’s Square confirmed Thursday that a staff member had tested positive for the virus.
“Our staff is very important to us. Please note that we are supporting this staff member and we will also inform and support our management team and staff in the future,” he said on his Facebook page.
The staff member had been in the store for the last time on Monday and had not returned since. The store had previously divided its teams as a precautionary measure before the news.
The virus was suspected to have been contracted from a source outside the store.
The store closed Thursday and would not reopen until it received authorization from the provincial health department.
News24 previously reported cases at Pick n Pay in Somerset West, Shoprite stores in Athlone and Bothasig, and Checkers at Bayside Mall in Table View for the past two weeks.
Last week, the Western Cape chief of health, Dr. Keith Cloete, emphasized the importance of going to stores only when absolutely necessary, News24 reported previously.
During a digital press conference last Thursday, Cloete said that many new infections were transmitted in supermarkets.
