- Saturday’s Super Rugby Lions v Pumas unlocked match was postponed due to Covid-19 regulations.
- This comes after Pumas players tested positive for Covid-19.
- SA Rugby said they will look to play the game, as well as the Pumas against the Bulls, at a later stage.
Covid-19 has again dealt a heavy blow to the Super Rugby Unlocked tournament after SA Rugby announced on Friday that the match between the Lions and Pumas at Ellis Park on Saturday will be postponed.
In a statement, the federation stated that mandatory weekly tests saw a Pumas player yield a positive result.
A second batch of tests was commissioned, in which two more players tested positive.
Contact tracing was started and the three infected players were shown to be part of a scrum session.
As a consequence, all the other players involved in that drill will need to isolate themselves.
“Several forwards of the Pumas have been quarantined for ten days,” he added. SA Rugby said.
“The decision was made as part of the prescribed precautions recommended by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) to limit the risk of further infection in the rugby community.”
SA Rugby plans to reschedule this weekend’s game, as well as Pumas’s clash against the Bulls in Pretoria next week.
This latest development will raise even more questions about the integrity of the competition after the Cheetahs and Lions were mated four to five potential record points after six positive tests at Lions camp.
Both teams could not find a suitable date to reschedule and earned two points.
While the weekend’s game wouldn’t have much to do with registration, the problem comes with the Bulls fixture, which would be betting on next week’s game to seal the Super Rugby Unlocked title.
“Plans are already being made to reschedule the matches of both Pumas.
Griquas ‘game against Sharks and Stormers’ encounter with the Cheetahs are not affected. “
