Covid-19 update: 2,156 new cases bring total SA to 710,515

As of Thursday, South Africa has registered a total of 710,515 positive cases of Covid-19, with 2,156 new cases identified in the last 24 hours, the health department announced.

There have also been 102 new deaths, bringing the total to 18,843. Of the 102 deaths reported today, 20 occurred in the past 48 hours, the department said.

“We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients.”

New evidence suggests that one of the miners who was killed in Marikana on August 13, 2012 may have been stabbed.

This emerged Thursday in Northwest Superior Court, where six police officers are on trial on murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a deadly confrontation between the police and striking miners that day.

One defendant in Brendin Horner murder was released on bail, another remains in jail

The first accused of the murder, Sekwetje Mahlamba, was denied bail by the Senekal Court of First Instance, which set the case for December 1.

Sekola Matlaletsa, the second defendant in the murder of 21-year-old farm manager Brendin Horner, was released on bail from Senekal Magistrates Court, while the first defendant, Sekwetje Mahlamba, will remain behind bars.
