Sisters Elmara Skhakhane; Leonissa Nzimande, 78 years old; Colleta Scholar, 78 years old; Anastasia Mthetwa, 86; Amara Madlala, 75 years old; Edmunda Nkomo, 80 years old; and Helen Cele, 88, died as a result of Covid-19.
“In a hopeful Advent time and season, this certainly comes as a deep wound to the Church, the congregation, and the conference at large. This is a very painful reminder that the scourge of Covid-19 has yet to abate its devastation in communities and society in general, “said LCCLSA President Nkhensani Shibambu.
“As the Consecrated Life Leadership Conference, we are deeply hurt by the loss of life under this spell of Covid-19,” he said.
Shibambu urged all congregations and religious communities to be “more vigilant and cautious in light of the subtle and deadly second wave.”
“None of us are immune to this pandemic. In the absence of a vaccine, we remain our best defense against the virus and the least we can do is continue to adhere to Covid-19 prevention and containment safety protocols, especially when the most people and communities come together to celebrate the holiday season and beyond, “Shibambu said.
