CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape is recovering strongly to avoid a tougher lockdown as the COVID-19 infection rate continues to rise.
With about 17,000 active cases, the infection rate in the province is now similar to that of the height of the pandemic in early July.

Prime Minister Alan Winde says he has presented a comprehensive plan to President Cyril Ramaphosa to mitigate the situation.

Several private hospitals are also reaching full capacity.
The province, for now, has avoided a tougher lockdown like its neighbor to the east.

Winde says she wants to keep the local economy open and invite people to visit this holiday season.
But, he says, it is a collaborative effort and it will be the behavior of citizens that will determine the need for more severe restrictions.
