In a statement Friday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said 2,783 people have contracted coronavirus in SA.
It is an overall increase of 178.
Gauteng also passed the dubious milestone of 1,000 cases for the first time.
More than 100,000 tests have been performed.
Two more deaths brought the total to 50. Both cases were recorded in the Western Cape and the health department expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased.
