A gorilla and two lions tested positive for Covid-19 at the Prague Zoo, which is closed amid confinement restrictions in the country.

“The lions Jamvan and Suchi and the male gorilla Richard tested positive today. His symptoms have been mild so far. The lions have a cold and cough. Richard is tired and lost his appetite,” said director Miroslav Bobek on his Facebook account .

Most of the animals were likely infected by staff and other animals will be tested, Bobek said. The Prague Zoo contacted other zoos that have seen Covid-19 cases.

In January, a troop of gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park suffered a Covid-19 outbreak that sickened several of the group’s eight members.

The Czech Republic has faced a further increase in Covid-19 cases that has raised its infection rate among the highest in the world per capita.
