JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Health Department says it is ready for the expected surge in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.
Provincial Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi says there are plans to ensure the province handles the rise in infections.

“The plan includes our communication strategy where we will be working with our communities starting Monday. We will educate people by making sure they comply with regulations, “he said.
“The plan is the occupation of beds. We check daily how many beds we have.”
Mokgethi joined healthcare workers at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital Thursday for a candle lighting ceremony.

The Department of Health reported that South Africa recorded 18,000 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours.
This marks another record number of cases registered in a single day.
