JOHANNESBURG – Home Affairs Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi said that people entering and leaving South Africa through the Beitbridge border post this holiday season will now need to present COVID-19 clearance certificates.
Motsoaledi made this announcement after meeting with his Zimbabwean counterpart on Friday.
The border post has been a site of widespread criticism recently, with several reports exposing how easy it is to pass through.
Motsoaledi has previously admitted that the country’s borders are porous and that something must be done.
“There are problems on our borders. It’s chock-a-block, especially the Beitbridge border. This year is a special year for the coronavirus. For the first time in December, we will require a COVID certificate.
“On the Zimbabwean side they want certificates that are no more than 48 hours old. On the South African side, the certificates should be no more than 72 hours old.”
