Cape Town – The number of Covid-19 cases in the Western Cape has risen to 522, the head of the provincial health department, Dr. Keith Cloete, said Thursday.
The announcement was made during Prime Minister Alan Winde’s digital conference on the province’s response to the coronavirus, which featured Debbie Schäfer, MEC for Education, and representatives from the Departments of Social Development and Health.
During Digete de Cloete’s part, he also referred to the community exams and tests that are taking place in the province and encouraged people to be examined.
He added that so far 8215 examinations have been carried out by health workers, with 449 tests carried out.
Cloete also said that of the 522 positive Covid-19 cases, 421 cases are in Cape Town, of which 99 come from rural districts and two are unassigned.
“In terms of hospitalization, we have 31 people in the hospital, 10 in the ICU and only the three deaths recorded,” he said. “In terms of isolation, 18 people are in our designated isolation facilities and four are in quarantine.”
Cloete also said the Western Cape has secured more masks, ensuring that the province’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health workers is sufficient to protect public and private health workers.
“In our own department, like the healthcare sector, we have been tracking how many Covid-19 positive cases for healthcare workers and we are very concerned and highly prepared to protect all of our healthcare workers at all times,” He said.
“We currently have 15 in the Western Cape, private and public, and only 5 of the 15 health workers have hired him at a health center. All 10 cases have contracted him as part of the community,” said Cloete.
Full details of the digicon will be released later, but have also been shared by Prime Minister Alan Winde:
