COVID-19: African countries sign groundbreaking agreement on vaccines

JOHANNESBURG – African countries signed a pioneering agreement aimed at securing millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the continent.

This agreement is part of the World Health Organization’s global coronavirus vaccine allocation initiative called COVAX.

It is intended to help purchase and distribute approved vaccines.

“Once there is a licensed and approved vaccine, COVAX will work to secure at least 220 million doses of vaccines for the continent,” said Richard Mihigo of the WHO.

Last month, South Africa launched clinical trials of a US-developed coronavirus vaccine with 2,900 volunteers, the second study of its kind.
