A total of 7,132 public health workers in KwaZulu-Natal have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, while 88 have succumbed to the virus. Most of the infected health workers were nurses.

KZN Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala said that as of November 27 no new infections or deaths have been reported in medical care.

Zikalala said the province has registered a total of 127,506 Covid-19 cases, with 6,212 still active.

“Sadly, we have lost 3,340 people, while fortunately 117,964 have recovered. As a province, we are currently ranked as the third highest country in the entire country, after Gauteng and the Western Cape, in terms of laboratory confirmed cases. We are ranked at number four after Gauteng, Western Cape and Eastern Cape in terms of Covid-19 deaths.

“We are extremely concerned about the increase in the number of new cases in the province during the last four weeks. We are currently in week 48 of 2020. During the last week, the numbers have increased substantially to 1,652,” he said. Zikalala.

“During the past week, the highest number of cases received per day was 345 on November 27, 2020. As of November 28, we had 287 new cases and no deaths. The eThekwini Metro it has continued to record the highest number of new daily cases and has contributed approximately half of all laboratory-confirmed cases at the provincial level.

“The number of deaths reported in the province has been decreasing in the last four weeks. The fatality rate, therefore, remains at 2.6% and the mortality rate was 30 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Amajuba and eThekwini districts have the highest mortality rate, 42 deaths per 100,000, “Zikalala said.

Zikalala promised that the province is monitoring resurgence indicators very closely and has not reached the resurgence threshold.

“These indicators are monitored on a daily basis and if the revival indicators are triggered, the Provincial Revival Plan will be implemented. The province dismantled the Royal Showgrounds Field Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. However, we must note that if the need arises, we have the capacity to activate beds that were used during the first wave.

The resurgence plan has been developed and is based on the basic actions that must be carried out to respond to the possible resurgence ” Zikalala said, she said.
