Two people have been admitted to Life Chatsmed Gardens Hospital for Covid-19 infections and are isolated, the hospital confirmed to News24 on Friday.
The hospital, located in Chatsworth, on the outskirts of Durban, is the third private center to have Covid-19 cases. Netcare Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti has six confirmed cases involving medical personnel. Netcare Saint Augustine Hospital has a total of 66 cases, including staff and patients. The latter has also recorded five deaths.
Dr. Charl van Loggerenberg, General Manager of Emergency Medicine at Life Healthcare said: “The Health Department is currently conducting Covid-19 audits at state and private hospitals. We fully support them and have already received visits from government officials to some of our hospitals. “
Increasing number
“In recent months, Life Healthcare has been working hard to prepare for an anticipated increase in Covid-19 patients. Currently, we are seeing an increasing number of Covid-19 patients admitted to our healthcare facilities nationwide. however, none of our hospitals are at or above capacity at this time. “

Van Loggerenberg said they made sure to mitigate the risk to hospital staff.
“… we are implementing strict security measures for the prevention and control of infections aligned with the guidelines of the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).”
He said this included personal protective equipment (PPE) and universal masking policies, as well as the daily screening of anyone who enters his hospitals.
“Employees and physicians are screened when they first enter the hospital building for the day and when they leave at the end of the day. All employees and physicians should report possible exposure or symptoms to the hospital administration on an emergency basis. so that the necessary steps and precautions can be implemented. “

Van Loggerenberg said his health worker exposure policy was in place “to ensure the effective management and resources of our facilities in the event that, or when, health workers are exposed to the virus.”
“This also ensures that our facilities can continue to operate as best as possible without minimal or minimal disruption.”
