In separate cases, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has gone to court to order the Garden Route beaches reopened, while Kouga Township submitted an urgent request to the Eastern Cape High Court.

CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Superior Court heard arguments Monday surrounding the beach ban imposed as part of the new COVID-19 regulations.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has gone to court to order the Garden Route beaches reopened.

It’s one of two challenges in court today: the second relates to the beaches of the Eastern Cape.

The district attorney’s attorneys have brought their case to court today. The party maintains that a balance must be struck between saving lives and preserving what remains of the nation’s economy.

This is particularly relevant for the Garden Route, which relies heavily on tourism and was hoping to make up for the many months of lockdown with a decent tourist season.

Further afield, in the Eastern Cape, the Kouga municipality wants the decision to close all beaches in that province to be annulled as well.

The municipality filed an urgent application today with the Eastern Cape Superior Court.

The municipality wants what it calls a more nuanced approach, striking the balance between saving lives and livelihoods, especially during the busy holiday season.

He believes that the closure of all the beaches in the Eastern Cape was too harsh.
