JOHANNESBURG – The High Court of Pretoria ordered the South African Defense Force (SANDF) to place the military officers involved in the murder of Collins Khosa on suspension while the murder is under investigation.
SANDF officials are accused of assaulting Khosa at his Alexandra home last month while enforcing the COVID-19 blockade regulation.
Khosa’s death sparked a public outcry with calls to action against those involved.
The court ruled in favor of Khosa’s family ordering precautionary suspensions for SANDF members accused of his murder.
Khosa was assaulted after he was allegedly found with alcohol in his yard in Alexandra.
While pronouncing his ruling, Judge Hans Fabricius emphasized that citizens have the right to human rights even during a state of disaster.
He said that SANDF and members of the police are constitutionally bound to protect these rights and use force within the limits of the law.
