CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Superior Court ordered activists occupying a Camps Bay mansion to vacate the premises next week.
The seven artivists legally reserved the house over almost two weeks ago, but then refused to leave after paying for just one weekend.
They wanted to draw attention to the problems of land and housing.
The property management company took legal action and on Friday a judge ordered his eviction before noon on October 8.
If they don’t, they would be evicted by the court bailiff and the police.
The attorney representing owner Milton De La Harpe said: “This is a fair trial. From the beginning, my client’s instruction was not to turn off the electricity, not to go and shut off the water, not to go and send people to evict them, not to send security. They did it in a humane way and they went through a process in court, we brought an application and the judge issued an order in terms of the law ”.
Sarah Summers, who represented the group in court, says they are satisfied with the ruling.
“We live to fight another day. We are a strong team and more people are recognizing that this is not an activist performance, this is transgressive, peaceful and thoughtful. “
