In March of last year, TimesLIVE reported that several unmarked vehicles descended on the prominent mansion of (then) power couple Shauwn and S’bu Mpisane in Durban North.
The visit by Sars officials was believed to be related to an alleged debt of 141 million rand owed to them.
TimesLIVE witnessed various members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU), as well as several unidentified individuals entering the home under the watchful eye of the couple’s private security personnel.
Previously, Sars seized their assets in 2016 under the Tax Administration Law. In addition to his three-story mansion in La Lucía, a 54ha estate in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands registered under the Sbusha Trust, a BMW X5, a Dodge Ram and other cars were also seized.
When the settlement case was before the courts previously, Mkhize had repeatedly stated that Sars was biased and acted in bad faith for refuse to enter into a deferred payment agreement. The court dismissed that claim.
In his statement on Friday, Sars said tThe company tried to show that it met the solvency test by disputing its debt to Sars. The judge relied on Sars’s version of the company’s indebtedness and confirmed that the company was insolvent in fact and legal.
