An Eastern Cape couple were released following a warning from the East London Magistrates Court on Monday after appearing on tax fraud charges worth R2.6 million.

The Serious Business Crimes Unit arrested them earlier.

According to Hawks spokesman Lwando Zenzile, from May to October 2010, Eunice Mayizole, 40, and Mongezi Sikhumbuzo Mayizole, 47, allegedly conspired and modeled themselves as tax practitioners for the US Tax Service. South Africa (SARS). They helped community members with their tax returns.

“They would meet with taxpayers at predetermined locations and ask them to register in the SARS electronic filing system, after which they would have access to login details,” Zenzile said.

It is understood that the couple submitted fraudulent information that resulted in illegal refunds.

They allegedly demanded a 10% payment for each transaction.

None of the victims was allegedly aware of the information that would justify any return.

The Mayizoles reportedly scored nearly R2.6 million.

His case has been postponed until January 13, 2021 pending further investigation.
