Eddie Jones says British and Irish Lions Warren Gatland have contacted England’s coaching staff ahead of next year’s tour of South Africa.
The Gatland Lions are scheduled to travel to South Africa for an eight-game road trip, including three Trials against the Springboks, which will begin next July.
England were crowned the Six Nations champions earlier this year and could win the first Fall Nations Cup if they beat France in the final on Sunday afternoon. Now Jones has encouraged his assistant coaches to fill positions on the Lions coaching staff if the opportunity arises after discovering that Gatland had approached Rugby Football Union about the possibility.
There has been contact. Warren toured the unions and spoke with CEOs about potential staff, ”Jones revealed. We are open to any opportunity for our staff and coaches to grow. We will wait and see.
“ We saw the benefits of Steve Borthwick participating in the Lions tour in 2017 and coming back having added more to his coaching repertoire. We would certainly be open to those ideas. ‘
According to a report by Telegraph, forward coach Matt Proudfoot and defense coach John Mitchell are the ones on Gatland’s radar and both are pioneers in taking on similar roles within the Lions setup.
Additionally, Jones says he wants English players to dominate the Lions team, setting a goal that at least 20 of his players win the national team.
“We see this Lions tour as an opportunity for us to grow another layer of depth,” Jones said.
“It is an opportunity for some young people to gain experience with England and see if they can adapt to international rugby. That’s what’s exciting for us.
“When I say I wish we had 20 players on the Lions tour, in a way it’s almost selfish because we would like the opportunity to bring in younger guys to create more depth in the team.
“We want to make sure that we are the dominant team in Europe and if you are the dominant team in Europe, then the Lions team dominates. It would be a great individual recognition to the efforts of the players ”.
