The Western Cape has recorded six additional Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the number to 70 in the province, Prime Minister Alan Winde said Tuesday.
In a statement, Winde added as of 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, 3,677 confirmed cases were recorded in the province. This is an increase of 226 cases from the 3,451 on Monday.
Of these, the total number of active cases in the province was 2,610.
As of Tuesday, a total of 47,751 tests had been performed.
Earlier Monday, Winde said the province, through its active case-finding approach, had significantly increased its testing, having conducted 19,619 tests in just over a week since April 27.
Most testing was initiated through the public sector, given the province’s testing strategy, Winde added.
“This significant increase in testing in the Western Cape in the past two weeks is now beginning to have an impact on NHLS capacity [National Health Laboratory Service] in this province and across the country to process all tests on time.
“This has impacted the publication of test results at regular intervals. We will discuss this matter with the President and the National Minister of Health to request that additional testing capacity be added to the country’s NHLS, as we can expect that testing increases even more across the country. ” “
Winde said it was also necessary to test options that would provide faster results.
The Western Cape has the highest number of positive cases in the country, followed by Gauteng.
It has also launched a statistics dashboard, which is updated once a day.
The national government is expected to release its latest figures by Tuesday afternoon.
