Johannesburg – A 39-year-old trucker who crashed into other cars on the road while allegedly driving drunk and 12 times over the limit was arrested.
The man lost control of his vehicle, which had a trailer, and then collided with a car that happened to collide with another on the R21 road next to the Pomona exit ramp in Kempton Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Seal Maremane of the Gauteng Traffic Police said his Highway Patrol Unit attended the scene of the accident where the man later admitted that he had drunk alcohol.
He was driving around 1:00 pm with bags in the trailer when he lost control of the truck and collided with a car that also lost control and collided with another car.
Immediately he was tested for alcohol consumption and the results were found to be 12 times above the limit, showing 1.25 mg per 100 ml.
“He couldn’t speak, he couldn’t stand, his eyes were red and he kept closing them. Imagine someone drinking on a highway.
“We condemn this type of irresponsible and reckless behavior by road users, especially during the holiday season, where motorists are expected to save lives.
“Anyone found driving a vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor will be charged, arrested and sentenced to up to seven years in prison. Drinking and driving is one of the main factors that contribute to fatal accidents resulting in loss of life, ”Maremane said.
The man, who was on duty at the time, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving and taken into custody at the Kempton Park Police Station.
He was expected to appear before the Kempton Park magistrate on Wednesday and no one was injured in the incident.
