Cape Town – A group of women activists, helping the homeless in Sea Point, say they live in fear of a “brigade of conservative white men” who have unleashed an “online reign of terror” on them.
Now the women have taken legal action in an attempt to end the alleged harassment, but did not point to any individual or group suspected of being behind the harassment.
One of the activists who wanted her name withheld said: “Men now scour social media platforms for those who support the homeless and then go out of their way to intimidate these women.”
When Argus reached out for comment, Kerry Hoffman of the food aid organization Souper Troopers was unable to comment and could only say: “Our attorneys have advised us not to comment as we have taken several legal actions against some of these men. “
Lucy Graham said in a message to this writer: “Men in our community are terrorizing, intimidating and threatening mainly women, but also some men, for supporting the homeless. We are being terrorized by white men for our support of the homeless. “
Sea Point area councilwoman Nicola Jowell said women had reached out to her about the harassment and bullying incidents.
Jowell said: “I told them to report the incidents to the police. We know that there is a space in dispute. One of the women’s houses was marked with graffiti and five months ago the incident with the burning of the Mini-Cooper occurred ”.
“I would just like to say that people must understand that disagreeing or disliking the work that people are doing does not entitle you to damage people’s property or take the law into your own hands. If the law does not act, it is because what these women do is not illegal, ”said Jowell.
In May, a vehicle belonging to Peter Wagenaar caught fire in what was said at the time to be a backlash from certain sections of the Sea Point community over the Wagenaar project feeding the homeless.
After the Wagenaar story broke, it emerged that the “Atlantic Seaboard Action Group” on Facebook had been among those criticizing Wagenaar for its initiative.
