Reports of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s illness have worried many South Africans and opposition party leaders who flooded Twitter to convey good wishes.

Presidential Minister Jackson Mthembu said Monday that Ramaphosa was “really sick” and “in blankets.” However, the acting spokesman for Ramaphosa Tyrone Seale said the president was recovering from a common cold.

Ramaphosa was expected to meet with the leadership of the National Union of Education, Health and Allied Workers (Nehawu) on Monday. Union members held a protest at union buildings in Pretoria over the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline workers and the possibility that public workers’ wages will not be increased this year.

Mthembu said Ramaphosa would likely meet with the Nehawu leadership on Wednesday.

“An arrangement has been made for the president to meet with the Nehawu leadership this week. I have been told that it is negotiated for Wednesday. Then they will raise the issues that need the attention of the head of state, ”Mthembu said.
