Competition Watchdog Takes Action With Two More Mask Providers To Increase Prices

The Competition Commission has referred two mask suppliers to the Competition Court for allegedly charging “astronomically high” prices on the masks.

Suppliers, Sicuro Safety and Hennox Supplies, allegedly charged more than 969.07% and 956%, respectively, for face masks, a Commission investigation found. “The firms have not provided the Commission with any reasonable explanation for such excessive price increases,” the Commission said in a statement on Monday.

“The Commission maintains that the prices for Sicuro and Hennox were a direct reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and its unprecedented impact on the world in general and on South Africa in particular.”

The Commission has referred the matter to the Court to impose sanctions and prohibit suppliers from charging excessive prices.

He previously investigated Babelegi Workwear and industrial suppliers, as well as Dis-Chem pharmacies for excessive pricing of price masks.

The Dis-Chem case has been heard in court. Dis-Chem told the Court that it was forced to increase the price of the masks due to the interruption in supply, as well as some suppliers increasing prices almost 40 times in February, Fin24 previously reported.

The Court has not yet announced a decision in the Dis-Chem case.
