Community demonstrations to stop mining at the Shaka Zulu site inspired the Mfecane wars of the 19th century

A community in Limpopo province has launched an urgent request to stop mining activity by a local company linked to the Australian entity Aquila Steel SA.

The people of Madimatle seek a ban against black-owned junior mining company Motjoli Resources for extracting iron ore from a sacred mountain in the community, said to be a spiritual place for traditional healers from across the region.

The community alleges that the company has ignored legal processes and questioned its intention to exploit. Last week, the company was clearing vegetation and building a road on the mountainside near Thabazimbi in Limpopo province. The community further claims that the sacred mountain at the center of the dispute was a battlefield during the Mfecane wars in the 19th century and the battles between the early European settlers and the people of Batswana.
