  • He was diagnosed with colon cancer in April.

Former ANC secretary in the Western Cape, Songezo Mjongile, died Thursday at his home in Johannesburg. He had colon cancer.

ANC spokesman Pule Mabe said the party was saddened by the news.

He said that Mjongile had died peacefully overnight at his family’s home in Morningside, Johannesburg, surrounded by his wife and loved ones.

“Comrade Songezo Mjongile from an early age joined the masses of our people in the struggle against the oppressive apartheid regime. He became an activist in the South African Student Congress (Things) and was later elected its president,” Mabe said.

“He continued his life of activism in the ranks of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL), rising through the ranks and elected to the national executive and national ANCYL working committees.

“Comrade Songezo, through his selfless and dedicated activism, went on to be elected Provincial Treasurer and then Provincial Secretary of the ANC in the Western Cape.”

Mabe said that Mjongile was diagnosed with colon cancer in April and that one of his last wishes was “to contribute to the renewal of the ANC and the success of the national democratic revolution.”

“This was a reflection of the commitment that Comrade Songezo had with the ANC, the structures of the mass democratic movement and with the wider society of South Africa.

“Goodbye Madiba, Yem-Yem, Sopitjo, Velbembhentsele, only enemies will never do anything to you!” Mabe said.
