JOHANNESBURG – The City of Joburg said it would act quickly to implement Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s recommendations.

Attorney Mkhwebane released several investigative reports on Monday.

Mkhwebane discovered that former Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba made irregular appointments in the city, including that of the chief housing executive and former head of the Joburg Metropolitan Police, David Tembe.

The city has welcomed the finding of Mkhwebane against Mashaba.

Spokeswoman Mlimandlela Ndamase said: “The Public Prosecutor has spoken out against the former mayor for acting in an inappropriate, irregular and illegal manner.”

Ndamase said the city was also considering instituting legal proceedings against those who improperly benefited.

“The city also wants to confirm that it will cross-examine the report and take further action to try to see how we could recover some of the money from those who have been designated irregularly and illegally.”
