JOHANNESBURG – Joburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo said the subway is in the final stages of the consultation process to change the name from William Nicol Drive to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Drive.

Makhubo spoke at a wreath ceremony on Good Friday in memory of fighting veteran Madikizela-Mandela since her passing on this day three years ago.

The city of Johannesburg announced in September its intention to change the name.

He said this move was in terms of his approved policy on naming streets and other public places.

Makhubo said the city wants this process to be completed in June.

“We are in the last stage of our consultations and there is a concerted effort on our part to do this in the next two months. This path should no longer be called William Nicol, but Mrs. Winfred Madikizela-Mandela. We emulate their exploits by serving the people of Johannesburg, the people of Gauteng and the people of South Africa, ”he said.
