CAPE TOWN – The Cape Town mayoral committee on Tuesday supported the decision to lift water restrictions and move to the lower rate from November 1.

The municipality said the decision was based on three key considerations:

  • by the National Department of Water and Sanitation the lifting of its restrictions applicable to the Western Cape water supply system.

  • projections that dams are unlikely to fall below 50% next winter.

  • anticipated use of water this summer.

The city said the fee had already been approved by the council in terms of the city’s 2020/21 budget.

Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said: “This lower rate will offer residents some financial relief while ensuring that we can provide reliable water services and invest in new water sources. Rates are set to cover the cost of water supply and sanitation “.
