When Renault revealed the first images of the new Dacia Sandero and Sandero Stepway in early September 2020, official details were scarce. Now, however, that has changed.

While the models shown here use Dacia badges, they show a preview of the Renault brand versions destined for the shores of South Africa.

So what new information has been released? Well, the French firm has dropped the first images of the cabins of the third generation models, as well as details of the platform and initial engine, as well as exterior dimensions.

We will start with the last. The new Sandero measures 4,088 mm long, 1,848 mm wide and 1,499 mm high, with a ground clearance of 133 mm. The Stepway is slightly longer and taller, at 4,099mm and 1,535mm respectively, with a raised ground clearance of 174mm. Both variants boast a declared luggage capacity of 328 liters, an improvement of 36 liters.

The newcomers run on the latest CMF modular platform of the firm, which according to Renault translates into “greater strength and rigidity with less weight.” A new front axle has also been fitted, complete with rectangular suspension arms, which the automaker claims provide “effective shock absorption and improved steering.”

In Europe, the engine range begins with the “SCe 65” model (offered only in Sandero form), which employs a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front wheels through a five speed motor. manual transmission.

Then there’s the “TCe 90,” which uses a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline unit paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a new continuously variable transmission. Lastly, the “TCe 100 Bi-Fuel” features a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged bi-fuel LPG engine, also paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Inside, Renault claims that the rear seats are “especially roomy”, with an additional 42mm of clearance compared to previous models. In addition, the firm ensures that the cabin offers up to 21 liters of practical storage space.

Up front, you’ll find newly designed seats that provide “more comfort and support” and are upholstered in “more premium” upholstery. Renault says it has added a wider range of adjustments to the driver’s seat and behind the wheel. Meanwhile, the gear stick is shorter than that of the outgoing model.

The Sandero and Sandero Stepway will be offered (in Europe, at least) with two different multimedia systems. The first, called Media Control, allows smartphones to be placed on a stand in front of the driver, creating a remote infotainment system. Meanwhile, Media Nav brings an 8.0-inch touchscreen located at the top of the dashboard, slightly tilted towards the driver and with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
