JOHANNESBURG – Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said there was already a clear indication that the country’s state of disaster will extend beyond January 15.

The statement is supposed to come to an end in two weeks, but Lamola, during a press conference, told reporters that if there was a review on the cards, it was likely to happen around 10 next month.

President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the country at alert level 3 on Monday night, restricting nightclubs, visits to the beach and the sale of alcohol.

This tier will also see the mandatory wearing of masks come into play, with South Africans now liable for a fine or sentenced to at least six months in jail for non-compliance.

Minister Lamola said that if there was a review of the current state of disaster, it would happen in the second week of January.

“Everything indicates that with the reports coming from Health, it is possible that we will have to extend the state of disaster again. But as for what regulations will be applicable, it will be announced when there is a review,” said the minister.

He said that while a fine was not established for those found to have violated current law, the chief magistrates have been working on guidelines to have a uniform approach.

“They have now developed guidelines that are guiding them in terms of what the appropriate penalty or fine is for any crime that falls within the Disaster Management Act.”

President Ramaphosa said the latest restrictions were aimed at slowing the spread of the pandemic and freeing up resources in the health sector.
