Seven people were killed and six others injured after a clash between two groups of men in the Mpeni town of Mount Ayliff on Friday.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the fight between a group of men from the village of Mpeni and that of Nokhatsheli occurred at approximately 05:00.
Police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said seven men were killed during the clash.
“Six other men from both sides have been hospitalized after suffering serious injuries during the confrontation,” Naidoo added.
The acting commissioner of the national police, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi, ordered the mobilization of a 72-hour activation plan that included criminal intelligence resources, forensic services and detective services.
Mfazi also ordered the immediate deployment of reinforcements in an attempt to bring stability to the area.
“I appeal to the community within Mount Ayliff and the surrounding areas to exercise the utmost restraint and assist the police in their investigations to bring those responsible for these attacks to the books,” Mfazi said.
