Oppo, the Chinese giant that looks set to become the world’s third-largest mobile phone seller next year, has launched its flagship phone in South Africa.

While some of its phones have been around for some time, the company has now established a local office in Woodmead, Johannesburg and has officially launched the Oppo A72 on the market.

It’s on sale from R6,999 (or from R399 per month on a Vodacom contract), which is roughly in the same ballpark as the Samsung Galaxy A51, Samsung Galaxy A31, and Huawei P40.

The Oppo A72 comes in two colors, both inspired by the polar circle: Aurora Purple and Twilight Black. The phone comes with four cameras: a large 48MP main camera sensor, two portrait-style lenses, and a 119 ° ultra-wide camera.

It comes with Android, but also with its own open operating system, ColorOS, as a “special layer” on top of Android 10. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor.

The phone comes with an 18W fast charger and its battery has impressed critics.

Calling it a “striking phone on the outside and a perfectly serviceable phone on the inside,” Stuff magazine said the A72’s standout feature is its “enormous battery life.”

“It includes a 5,000 mAh battery that is really impossible to discharge in the course of a day.”

The British publication Tech Advisor said the A72’s battery is “an absolute monster”, making it “a two-day-old phone.”

The Stuff reviewer has noticed some performance issues, particularly lags when switching applications.

Great seller

Oppo, ultimately owned by the Chinese group BBK Electronics, is in the same place as other mobile phone brands like Vivo.

Oppo recently confirmed that it is on track to increase sales by 30% this year to 150 million smartphones, thanks to the launch of more 5G models, particularly in China, Japanese business publication Nikkei reported.

Currently, the company has an 8% market share of the global smartphone market, but it is predicted to emerge as the third largest seller (after Samsung and Apple) in 2021.

Huawei is currently the world’s biggest seller, but according to a new DigiTimes report, it is expected to drop to seventh place next year. This comes amid the US government’s attack on the brand, including banning its trade deals between US companies like Google and Facebook.
