Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has said that he is not really considering rotating his international goalkeepers Bafana Bafana and Nigeria Itumeleng Khune and Daniel Akpeyi.
Hunt suggested that his task will be to help Khune regain his best condition to compete with Akpeyi for the No. 1 Amakhosi jersey, after the Nigerian returned to the Chiefs’ starting lineup in their 1-0 victory in the DStv Premiership. against Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday night.
Akpeyi was largely a passenger in a one-way traffic match with a sometimes rampant combination of the Chiefs, who were denied a much larger score by hitting the post three times and Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.
Nigeria number one Akpeyi, however, calmly faced the few situations that came his way.
Hunt said Akpeyi had yet to play in 2020-21 while waiting for his work permit to be approved.
When asked if he would rotate the two international glove men, the Chiefs coach said: “I don’t think so.
“The problem is that we have not had an adequate preseason. ‘And you’ [Khune] came back from a major injury ‚and didn’t play much‚ then played well at the end [of last season].
“And then we’ve had three and a half weeks trying to get everyone to settle in. And Daniel had a problem with his work permit, and he arrived yesterday.
“So, you know, I felt like I was ready to play, and let’s take a look.”
Akpeyi was fit and largely kept the ex-Bafana on by keeping the stalwart Khune, also battling various injuries, on the bench last season, the Nigerian playing a role in the Chiefs leading the Premiership until Mamelodi Sundowns took him to the title. in the last day.
Khune played a shaky game in the Chiefs’ 3-0 loss in their first Premiership game to the Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
