Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt could only chuckle and answer negatively, when asked if Bafana Bafana’s newly vacant job is somewhere on his mind as Amakhosi prepares to face Wydad Casablanca on Saturday.
The Chiefs face Wydad, who beat the Soweto Giants 4-0 in an arbitration-affected clash in neutral Burkina Faso on February 28, at FNB Stadium (kickoff at 6pm) aware that a win could put Amakhosi’s right-back in the fray in Group C of the 2020-21 Caf Champions League.
The game comes days after the South African Football Association (Safa) decided to release another coach from his contract with the Bafana. Molefi Ntseki was fired on Wednesday after the national team failed to reach the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 loss to Sudan on Sunday.
And of course, as a stagnant record, the name of Hunt, a four-time Premiership winner, is already among those speculated as a possible replacement, as it happens every time the national seat becomes vacant.
Hunt was asked if Bafana’s work and the prospect of Safa coming to call were anywhere on his mind. He couldn’t suppress a laugh at the question.
“How many times have we traveled this road?” Laughed the Chiefs coach.
“Nowhere near. My mind is on Wydad on Saturday. That is the most important game for me.”
The Chiefs drew 0-0 against Horoya of Guinea at home, then lost heavily to Wydad, then won 2-0 against Petro de Luanda of Angola at home and drew 0-0 with them in their first Champions League group stage. .
Wydad leads the group with 10 points, Horoya is second with five and Chiefs third on goal difference, also with five points.
Powerhouse Wydad were the 2017 champions of Africa’s premier continental club competition and runners-up in 2011 and 2018-19.
