Chiefs appoint Zwane, Sheppard as assistant coaches

After a few days of speculation, yesterday Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard as the new assistant coaches to help new mentor Gavin Hunt.

The names of Zwane and Sheppard emerged several hours after Hunt’s arrival last Thursday, with Kwanele Kopo and Dr. Khumalo initially rumored to be the incoming assistant coaches.

Zwane rises to the senior team setup from the club’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC), where he had been the head coach for more than five years. Like Zwane, Sheppard was also coaching an MDC team, Bidvest Wits, before joining Amakhosi.

The two assistants will juggle the responsibilities of the first team with working in youth structures, especially in their home turf at MDC. At the now-sold Wits, Sheppard doubled down on the Diski Challenge tasks to help Hunt in the Premier League.

Amakhosi Chairman Kaizer Motaung pledged to support the new technical panel. The Chiefs owner is confident the duo will run smoothly with Hunt.

“I think we have built a solid technical team and we will give them all the necessary support they need,” Motaung said in a statement released by the club yesterday. “The great experience between the three gentlemen is what we need to make sure we compete and build a strong team.”

Motaung added: “The fact that Arthur and Dillon will work simultaneously with the senior team, as well as with our reserve team, means that the transition from young players to the first team will be easier.

Like Hunt, Zwane and Sheppard are believed to have signed three-year agreements each.
