Durban – The country’s embattled Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who is under immense pressure to stand down and apologize for pro-Israel comments he made during a webinar organized by the Jerusalem Post in June last year, resigned. as rector of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. (UKZN).

No reason has been given for the sudden resignation, which comes as the Chief Justice is appealing a ruling by the Judicial Conduct Committee ordering him to apologize for the pro-Israel comments, which were deemed insensitive to the suffering of the people of Palestine.

In announcing the resignation of Mogoeng Mogoeng, the university said that he fulfilled all of his duties, which included awarding academic degrees, diplomas and certificates during graduation ceremonies, and his last face-to-face graduation was in 2019.

“However, Chief Justice Mogoeng has informed the chairman of the council and the rector of his retirement from office,” the university said in a statement.

The University of Durban said the vacant rector position would be filled by Professor Nana Poku, the current rector. This would happen while the university participates in processes to elect a new rector for June of this year.

Mogoeng’s pro-Israel comments were: “As a Christian, I have an obligation to love Israel, to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, which actually means the peace of Israel. And as a Christian I can do nothing but love and pray for Israel because I know that Israel’s hatred for me and that my nation can only bring unprecedented curses on our nation.

They have divided some non-governmental organizations in the country.

On Mogoeng’s side is the South African Zionist Federation, while on the other side is Africa 4 Palestine (formerly BDS South Africa), which advocates the global isolation of the state of Israel.

The unflappable Mogoeng is currently appealing the Judicial Conduct Committee’s decision of March 4, 2021.
