Tuesday’s largely expected announcement saw the SA Rugby general council vote have the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers as the country’s four franchises in a disputed PRO16 expansion.
However, the Cheetahs retained their franchise status and could enter a “Super 8” competition that will ensure “additional income.”
The Bloemfontein franchise now has two options: accept its fate and invest its energy in the proposed Super 8 series, or head to the court and dispute its omission from PRO Rugby.
Cheetahs Managing Director Harold Verster confirmed to Sport24 Thursday morning that those were the two options at stake.
He said the Cheetahs will hold a board meeting on Friday to decide which route to take.
“The options are to abide by the outcome of the SA Rugby meeting on Tuesday or go the legal route.
“We also need to meet with our sponsors to determine their interest in the Super proposal. [8] series and if we can expect the same level of support we have enjoyed over the years. “
The Super 8 series could involve two teams from New Zealand and Australia, and one from South Africa, the Pacific Islands, Japan and Argentina.
The Cheetahs entered PRO14 in 2017 when they, along with the Southern Kings, were eliminated from Super Rugby.
