Ward councilor Previn Vedan was investigating the underlying cause of the sudden outbreak of Link Road protests that blocked entry and exit points and caused chaos on the roads, including stoning of vehicles.
Initially, the protest was thought to be for the non-delivery of the food baskets. Cleanup operations were underway yesterday on Link Road with a strong law enforcement presence.
Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that last Thursday, a known man reportedly went to the Shallcross Road offices, where he questioned Vedan about the obstacles to food.
“He allegedly threatened to call the Bottlebrush community to burn down the mall and other stores in the area. A case of incitement to commit public violence was opened at the Chatsworth Police Station, ”said Mbele.
Vedan said that a week ago, members of his neighborhood structure and a businessman met. Vedan was given seven days to raise R1m.
Vedan said last Wednesday that the group’s leader came to his office with two others. Once again, they demanded that he collect the money and also allow them to “coordinate” each of the 1,000 obstacles that the municipality of eThekwini distributes. The next day they met again, and Vedan explained that he could not have a public meeting and that he would make flyers with information on the issue of the distribution of the obstacle.
“They were happy with what was discussed. I’m not sure what caused the transformation of the events. Residents have been misled. They have been blurring the lines and processes to follow to get food and subsidies from Sassa.
“Each neighborhood councilor will be assigned 1,000 baskets. That has not yet been implemented in my neighborhood, ”he said.
Vedan said he engaged with business leaders in the community. They were able to obtain baskets and distribute them in the meantime.
“I am not willing to tolerate any threat. You would not be required to rescue. I filed a charge against the lead author. We will not tolerate lawlessness in our neighborhood.
“We know this is a stressful time. Many of our people, even those involved in the protests, are good and honest. It is about spreading the word and communicating a message that is correct, honest and true,” said Vedan.
Shallcross resident Moosa Abdool, 37, and his wife said they were lucky to be alive after being detained at the Link Road protest Sunday night. Your bakkie now has rock and brick dents thrown into the vehicle.
