Durban – Crash scene investigators are piecing together a crash on Stapleton Road Monday night in which a fleeing truck collided with multiple vehicles.
The incident was captured in dramatic cell phone images that went viral on social media on Tuesday.
Pre-crash details were vague on Tuesday morning and were being investigated.
A Metro police officer who is not authorized to speak to the media said it was unclear how many cars were involved in the accident and that one person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It is not clear who the deceased is. The truck driver lost control of the transporter, appeared to be in the wrong gear, and crashed into the vehicles. The truck went off the road and crashed into the embankment. There are not many details available as the police are still present at the scene, ”the officer said.
The truck belongs to Zenith Logistics.
When contacted for comment, an unidentified man said they were aware of the crash but declined to comment.
“We are not speaking or commenting on the matter at this time,” the man said before hanging up.
KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesman Robert McKenzie said the truck had collided with at least four vehicles before knocking down an embankment.
