The pirates defeated 10 men Bloemfontein Celtic team in the final at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
THE TOURNAMENT WAS PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1972
The victory was the Pirates’ tenth MTN 8 title in a tournament that was first played in 1972.
Celtic opened the scoring already in the third minute via Siphelele Luthuli only for Namibia Deon hotto to equalize the Buccaneers in the 32nd minute.
With the score tied at 1-1 at halftime, everything was up for grabs in the second half.
However, disaster struck Celtic in the 58th minute when the midfielder Thato lingwati was marked in red.
Substitute for the first half Thembinkosi Lorch he stepped forward to convert the resulting penalty, giving the Pirates an advantage they didn’t give up.
The pirates took 8 million rand richer for their victory, while Celtic had to console themselves with 800,000 rand.
Celtic had been seeking only their second MTN 8 title, having lifted the trophy in 2005 when the tournament was still known as the SAA Super Eight Cup.
Mobile giants MTN have sponsored the tournament since 2008.
