Boseman spent much of his career on the big screen, but one of his only television appearances was absolutely unforgettable. Hosted NBC’s weekly sketch show Saturday night live in April 2018 to promote Black Panther alongside musical guest Cardi B, and although he only repeated the role of T’Challa for a single sketch, the appearance of the King of Wakanda in Black Jeopardy! ended up creating one of the funniest moments in recent SNL history.

Presented by Kenan Thompson’s Darnell Hayes, Black Jeopardy! Usually it serves as an opportunity to poke fun at clueless white characters, but in this particular round, two black Americans are paired up with the confused foreign king of T’Challa. As a resident of the wealthy and protected nation of Wakanda, T’Challa gets almost every answer wrong until she is asked what she would do if “Karen”, her imaginary white friend, offered to bring her potato salad to her barbecue. Announcing that he thinks he understands the game, T’Challa spends some time thinking out loud about Karen’s likely under-seasoned potato salad, while making sure that he has never eaten potato salad, and wonders if it would finish. adding something “unnecessary” to the plate, like “raisins”.

Boseman is largely remembered as a serious actor, but in this segment, he proved himself a comedic talent and dramatic powerhouse, delighting audiences with a thunderously funny version of T’Challa.
