JOHANNESBURG – Police Minister Bheki Cele called for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the arson and vandalism of state property during a violent protest in the Free State.
More than 1,000 protesters stormed Senekal Magistrates Court Tuesday over the murder of farm manager Brendin Horner, whose body was found tied to a pole in Senekal last week.
Shots were fired, a police vehicle caught fire and court property was damaged.
Police Ministry spokesman Lirandzu Themba said law enforcement officials were outnumbered.
“Any kind of force would have escalated the situation.
“This is what the police were trying to avoid. That is why now, there is an ongoing investigation to ensure that those who committed these acts are brought to account.”
