Cape Town – Police Minister Bheki Cele has expressed “shock and disgust” at the violent demonstration by a group of farmers in front of the Senekal Magistrates Court in the Free State, which resulted in arson and vandalism.
The protesting farmers had gathered in front of the court to demand justice for the murdered farm manager Brendin Horner, 21, when two suspects appeared in court.
Cele also questioned the protesters’ motives for “directing their anger at the police.”
“Police reports indicate that after the brief court appearance, around a hundred protesters, including armed farmers, stormed the court building demanding the surrender of the suspects,” the Police Ministry said in a statement.

This violent act resulted in the vandalism of judicial property and a police vehicle was also overturned and set on fire. The police had to use tear gas to disperse the violent group. ”
Cele said: “While we all condemn the gruesome murder of this young man in Paul Roux, absolutely no one has the right to take the law into their own hands, no matter what the situation is. This kind of anarchy cannot be justified or taken lightly.
“There is no logic when these protesters burn a police van, which is the same resource that is intended to help them.
“It is also puzzling why the anger of this community is directed at the police when the police have made arrests and the suspects are in court.”
Cele wishes to remind all South Africans that while the right to peacefully protest is part of any democratic society, “it is not absolute and carries with it responsibilities.”
