The mayor of Cederberg, in the Western Cape, says the municipality is considering taking the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to court for a search and seizure operation related to the purchase of PPE.
Sylvia Qunta alleged Monday that the SIU had arrived earlier without a proclamation or a court order when they seized documents and electronic devices.
“This type of conduct is unacceptable and will go to court to review it when appropriate,” he said.
SIU spokesman Kaizer Kganyago denied the claim, saying: “By now, everyone in this country knows that there was a proclamation signed by the president six weeks ago. I don’t know what they are talking about. We work within the law. “
It added that, contrary to Qunta’s assertions that the city administrator ordered the staff to fully cooperate with the SIU, a memorandum was sent to the staff instructing them not to cooperate with the investigators and to try to prevent them from will enter the facilities.
